KATIE O. PALACIOS

Looking back on my education and professional career, it's as if I was always headed towards the Educational Technology Master's program. I've always liked learning new Katie Palaciosthings and choosing a major as an undergraduate was difficult for me. I didn't want to close any doors on anything. My double major in Cognitive Science and Latin American Studies is proof of that. Even my first job as an analyst with Accenture brought me continued learning and broad exposure to technologies. When I left Accenture to teach English in Ecuador, I took the best risk of my life. Learning and growing requires taking risks - something that my parents started teaching me at an early age.

I remember when I was about 6 years old my family went innertubing at Yosemite. Everytime the innertube would drift close to tree branches I would yell "Snag!" at the top of my lungs and point to the floating branch. I was so fearful. I had this image of the raft hitting the branch and popping into little pieces of black rubber and my family being left to drown in the cold water. Of course that never happened. Dad and mom steered us safely down the river, sometimes bumping into the snags, but always finding smooth waters eventually. My family still jokes with me about "snags." In those family adventures, I learned that snags are what challenge us - push us - to get over our fears. Life is full of snags, but that's what forces us to learn and grow, and bumping into them along the river is what makes life an adventure.

This site showcases the projects completed as part of my Educational Technology Master's degree at San Diego State University and serves as the professional portfolio that I'll present at the completion of my graduate coursework. Thanks for taking the time to learn more about the snags and smooth waters I encountered during my pursuit of this degree.

This portfolio was presented in May 2009 just prior to my completion of my Masters Degree.
